Overview
Systems Thinking in Practice is an eight-week systems thinking course for people who design products, services, policies, and organisational change. Created by Simon Whatley through Humane Design, it focuses on using systems ideas in day-to-day work rather than treating complexity as an abstract academic subject. The course is delivered on demand through daily email lessons, giving you a steady cadence for learning and reflection without requiring fixed live sessions. It is especially relevant to product managers working on problems where customer behaviour, incentives, operational constraints, policy, and technology influence one another.
The curriculum develops a practical toolkit for seeing and describing systems. You work with stocks and flows, reinforcing and balancing feedback loops, delays, boundaries, and leverage points. Causal-loop mapping helps you turn a vague sense that “everything is connected” into an explicit model that colleagues can inspect and challenge. The course also covers safe-to-fail experiments, an important complement to systems mapping: instead of claiming you can predict a complex environment perfectly, you design bounded interventions that reveal how the system responds. A capstone intervention proposal brings the methods together around a problem you choose.
This course is a good fit for PMs, service designers, researchers, strategists, and policy practitioners who routinely face second-order effects. You might be trying to improve marketplace liquidity, change user habits, reduce support demand, redesign an internal workflow, or introduce AI into an established organisation. In each case, a local optimisation can shift the burden somewhere else. The course helps you question the frame, identify who and what sits outside it, and recognise when an apparently sensible metric creates an unwanted feedback loop. No specialist modelling background is required; the emphasis is on applied reasoning and communication.
The main benefit is better intervention design. You finish with tools for explaining complexity without flattening it, locating places where a modest change could have disproportionate impact, and deciding what evidence an experiment should produce. The eight-week format also creates space to revisit assumptions rather than rushing from diagram to solution. For product leaders, that discipline can improve strategy, discovery, prioritisation, and stakeholder conversations. This is not a generic PM fundamentals course, and it will not hand you a universal framework. It is a structured way to strengthen judgment when linear plans and isolated feature thinking are no longer enough.
